Chinchorreo Beach & Bar Hop.

The Puerto Rican Saturday tradition — small bars, beach stops, fritters, and cold beer up the Atlantic coast, with a designated driver.

The Activity

The other chinchorreo.

If Guavate is the mountain version of chinchorreo and Piñones is the coastal-east version, this is the coastal-west version — a loop up the Atlantic coast through smaller towns and roadside spots that most San Juan tours never reach. You'll stop at a few open-air bars (chinchorros), eat the regional fritters, drink Medallas with locals, and hit a beach in between.

It's slower than Piñones, less heavy than Guavate, and closer to the actual rhythm of how Puerto Ricans spend a Saturday afternoon.

Why people love it

Because the west-coast bars don't draw tourists, which means you're the guest in someone's neighborhood, not in a tour group. The owners often come out to chat. The food is honest. The bar music gets louder as the afternoon goes on.

Why we love it

Once you've done Guavate and Piñones, this is the third leg of the chinchorreo trifecta — the version that feels least like a tour and most like a Saturday. The drive itself is part of the experience: coastal road, ocean on one side, beach towns most visitors never see on the other.

And the driver matters. Chinchorreo with rum and beer means you really, really do not want to be the one behind the wheel.

Pro tips

  • Wear sandals you can get sand in. Some stops are right on the beach.
  • Bring a swimsuit and a beach towel — there's usually a swim stop.
  • Cash. Many of these spots are still cash-preferred.
  • Pace yourself on the Medallas — five to six stops adds up.
  • Don't skip the alcapurrias even if you're full. Each spot's recipe is different.
  • Tip your guide and driver generously. They're working a long Saturday.

The logistics

  • Duration: about 5 to 6 hours
  • Difficulty: easy — eating, drinking, light walking
  • Group size: small
  • Pickup: from San Juan area
  • Distance from the house: route covers the west-of-metro coast
