Things to Do›El Yunque & the Rainforest
01 · El Yunque & the Rainforest
El Yunque Rainforest & Waterslide.
A guided small-group day in the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. system — with the natural waterslide locals send first-timers to.
The Activity
A half-day in the canopy.
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States forest system — 29,000 acres of cloud forest, switchback roads, and waterfalls fed by 200 inches of rain a year. The road in climbs out of the coastal plains and into a different climate within twenty minutes.
This particular tour keeps the group small (typically eight to twelve people), which means you actually get to talk to your guide. The route covers a moderate rainforest hike, two swimmable falls, and the natural rock waterslide that's been carved into the river by centuries of water — the same one locals have been sliding down since before the road existed.
Why people love it
Because every other version of this trip is on a bus with forty other people. You hike the same trails, swim in the same pools — but you do it with a guide who knows the names of the trees and isn't trying to corral a tour group. It's the difference between a postcard and a memory.
Why I love it
The waterslide. It looks intimidating from the top — a smooth groove of slick volcanic rock dropping into a green pool — and then the guide just walks up, sits down, and goes. After that, everyone else has to. It's the photo your group will be sending to their friends for years.
And the drive back: damp hair, sun coming through the windows, the smell of the rainforest still on your shirt. You'll be back at the house by mid-afternoon with the whole evening still ahead.
Pro tips
- Wear shoes you can swim in. Trail-runners or grippy sandals — not flip-flops.
- Bring a dry bag or zip-top for your phone. You will get wet.
- Quick-dry shorts and a swimsuit underneath. Skip the cotton.
- The pickup is in the metro area — confirm with the operator that they'll grab you from Santurce (they will; just remind them).
- Eat breakfast at the house. The road in doesn't have great options and you'll be hungry by 1pm.
- Bring a $20 in cash for the guide tip. They earn it.
