Culebra & Flamenco Beach.
Ferry to Culebra from Fajardo, snorkel with sea turtles in the morning, and spend the afternoon on Playa Flamenco — one of the most photographed stretches of sand in the world.
The Activity
The day-trip everyone remembers.
Culebra is a small island twenty miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico, reachable only by ferry or small plane. Almost nothing is built on it. The water around it is the color shellfish should be illegal to swim in. Playa Flamenco — the half-moon-shaped main beach — has been listed on every "world's best beaches" list ever published.
This tour handles everything that makes Culebra annoying to plan solo: the early-morning departure, the ferry tickets (which sell out and aren't bookable for visitors easily), the snorkel gear, and the timing to get you both reef and Flamenco in one day.
Why people love it
Because Flamenco in person is brighter than the photos, the water is warmer than you'd guess, and the snorkel reef has actual sea turtles. You leave San Juan in the dark and come back at sunset with sand still in your hair.
Why we love it
It's the marquee beach day on the island. We send everyone here at least once. The water reads as a different color than any other beach we've seen — somewhere between aquamarine and pool-bottom blue. And because it's only reachable by ferry, the crowds stay low.
Pair it with a low-key day before and a slow day after — the early start (you're up around 6:30am) and the salt and sun add up.
Pro tips
- Sleep early the night before. The departure is brutally early.
- Reef-safe sunscreen ONLY. Culebra enforces it.
- Wear your swimsuit out the door. Saves time.
- Bring twice as much water as you think.
- The food on the island is limited — eat a big breakfast or pack snacks.
- Cash for the beach kiosks and the boat tip.
- If you stay an extra night on Culebra independently, the next morning at Flamenco before the ferries arrive is magic.
The logistics
- Duration: about 10 hours (full day)
- Difficulty: easy — swimming, beach time
- Group size: small group on the snorkel boat
- Departure: early morning from San Juan area
- Distance from the house: ferry leaves from Ceiba (~1 hour east); transport often included
