Vieques Ferry & Bio Bay.
Ferry to Vieques from Ceiba, spend the day on empty beaches, and kayak the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world after dark.
The Activity
The bigger, quieter sister island.
Vieques is twice the size of Culebra and a fraction as busy. It was a U.S. Navy bombing range until 2003, which kept it undeveloped — and now most of the island is a national wildlife refuge with miles of public beaches and almost nobody on them. Wild horses graze along the shoulders of the road.
This tour ferries you over in the morning, gives you a full day at the beaches, dinner along the way, and ends with the Mosquito Bay bio bay tour at night — the brightest bioluminescent bay on the planet, by official measurement.
Why people love it
Because Vieques is what people picture when they think "untouched Caribbean" and rarely actually find. Beaches without facilities, water without crowds, a small town (Esperanza) with a couple of bars, and a bay that glows so brightly your paddle leaves a comet trail.
Why we love it
The Mosquito Bay version of the bioluminescent bay is genuinely better than the Fajardo one — brighter dinoflagellates, less moonlight in the cove, fewer boats. Combined with a full day on a wild beach, it's one of those days that makes a trip feel like a different scale than the rest of your vacation.
And the wild horses. They wander up to the road like they own it. They sort of do.
Pro tips
- Book this for a night close to the new moon. Mosquito Bay glows brighter on darker nights.
- Long day — 11 hours door-to-door. Cancel anything important the next morning.
- No phones in the bay. Same reason as Fajardo — flash ruins night vision.
- Reef-safe sunscreen.
- Bring a long-sleeve light layer for the bay kayak.
- Cash for tips: ferry crew, day driver, kayak guide. Three roles.
- Snacks. The food options between activities are limited.

- Duration: about 11 hours (morning into night)
