Ron del Barrilito Rum Tasting.

The oldest rum still in production on the island — a 140-year-old family distillery with a tasting room, a stone hacienda, and a strict no-shortcuts blend.

The Activity

The serious rum on the island.

Casa BACARDÍ is the rum you've heard of. Ron del Barrilito is the rum bartenders bring out when you ask them what they actually drink. It's been made by the same family since 1880 — aged in sherry casks, blended to a recipe that hasn't changed in three generations, and bottled at the same hacienda south of San Juan.

The Tasting Tour is the small-group, skip-the-line, hour-long version. You walk through the family history (it's good), taste the four expressions side by side, and end at the bar. The Three-Star is great. The Five-Star is great. The Six-Star — the rare one — is the reason people make this trip.

Why people love it

Because the rum is genuinely exceptional and the place is the opposite of a theme park. Old stone walls, old wooden barrels, somebody's grandmother's portrait on the wall. The pours are generous, the staff is patient with the questions, and the bottle you buy on the way out is half the price of buying it back home — if you can find it back home at all.

Why I love it

Two reasons. First, the Six-Star is one of the best aged rums in the world and almost nobody outside Puerto Rico has tasted it. Second, the experience is closer to a winery visit in Napa than to anything else on the rum tour circuit — slower, more serious, more about the spirit than the spectacle. If your group has any whiskey/wine snobs, this is the booking.

Pro tips

  • Eat first. The pours are larger than they look and you'll be tasting four.
  • Book the late-morning slot. The light through the warehouse windows is the photo.
  • Pace yourself — water between pours, don't try to keep up.
  • Buy a bottle of the Six-Star while you're there. It's hard to find off-island.
  • You can Uber. Cheaper than dinner in Condado.
  • Skip-the-line is real — book in advance, walk past the queue.
  • Tip the host. Knowledgeable staff is the whole experience here.
