Toroverde is an adventure park built on a ridge in the central mountains, an hour or so southwest of San Juan. They run several lines, but La Bestia is the one people come for: 4,800-some feet of cable, dropping you off a mountain, in a harness designed to put you face-down with your arms back.

You hit speeds in the high 90s mph. It lasts close to a minute and a half. You can see the coast.

Why people love it

Because it's actually one of the longest ziplines in the world — not "one of the top five in the Caribbean," not "one of the longest in North America" — actually, materially, one of the longest, period. People come from off-island for it. And once you're past the initial drop, your brain stops freaking out and you just start laughing.

Why I love it

It's the activity I send people on when they want one big "we did THAT" memory from the trip. Forty-five seconds of footage that nobody at home has ever taken. The drive in and out winds through the central mountains — beautiful, slow, with lechoneras along the road. Make a half-day of it.

Pro tips

Eat a light breakfast. Heavy food + superman position = no.
Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Wear them; don't try to argue.
Long-ish hair: tie it back hard. Wind will catch loose hair.
Pay for the GoPro footage. You will want it and you cannot recreate it.
Plan to spend a half day — the park has other lines too, and people usually ride more than just La Bestia.
If you weigh on the lighter side, the operators have ballast vests. Use one if they offer.
The drive from San Juan is about 90 minutes. Use Toll roads ($1.30 each) — they save 20 minutes.
