Beginners Surf Lesson — Luquillo.
A two-hour lesson at La Pared Beach in Luquillo — soft-top boards, patient instructors, and almost certainly your first wave by the end.
The Activity
Stand up by lunch.
La Pared Beach in Luquillo has the easiest learning waves in the metro area — small, soft, consistent, and breaking over sand instead of reef. The instructors run a thirty-minute land lesson, then take you out and push you into your first waves until you can do it yourself. By the end of the two hours, almost everyone has stood up at least once.
The wetsuits, rash guards, and boards are included. Group size is small (usually 4-6) and there's a real instructor-to-student ratio.
Why people love it
Because surf lessons in most Caribbean destinations are expensive, half-supervised, and you barely get a wave. Luquillo's instructors are local pros, the waves cooperate with beginners, and the standing-up rate is genuinely high. It's also a great half-day with kids.

The combination of Luquillo's gentle waves and the operator's coaching means it actually works. We've watched people who had never touched a surfboard catch three waves in the first hour. Once you stand up on your own, the rest of the trip you'll have a story.
Bonus: Luquillo Beach itself is gorgeous — a long crescent with food kiosks just up the road. Stay after for the rest of the day.
Pro tips
- Morning lesson. Wind picks up after noon and the waves get messier.
- Long-sleeve rash guard if you burn easily. The reflection off the water is brutal.
- Bring an underwater phone case if you want footage. The instructors often have one too.
- Apply reef-safe sunscreen 20 min before the lesson — wax + sunscreen don't mix when you're moving.
- Hydrate before. You'll be in salt water for two hours.
- Tip your instructor. They worked.
- Eat at the Luquillo kioskos after — alcapurrias and a Medalla, perfect post-surf.
